In your first counselling session, you can expect a warm, confidential conversation focused on getting to know you. Your therapist will discuss your goals, explain how sessions work, and ask about what brings you in. It is a “meet and greet” designed to ensure you feel safe, heard, and comfortable with your counsellor’s approach.
What actually happens during the first appointment?
Think of the first session as a “discovery” phase. While movies often show people lying on a couch diving into deep childhood trauma immediately, the reality is much more grounded. Your counsellor will likely lead with a few housekeeping items, like privacy policies, before moving into a relaxed dialogue about your life.
The goal isn’t to “fix” everything in 50 minutes; it’s to build a foundation of trust. You are in the driver’s seat—you only have to share what you feel ready to share.
What questions will my counsellor ask me?
To get a clear picture of how to support you, your therapist might explore:
- What brings you in today? (The specific challenges or “last straw” moments).
- What does a “better life” look like to you? (Setting your personal goals).
- What have you tried before? (Identifying what has or hasn’t worked for your mental health).
- Your daily rhythms: (How you are sleeping, eating, and moving).
How should I prepare for my first session?
You don’t need to bring a script or a formal history of your life. However, these small steps can help ease any “first-timer” jitters:
- Reflect on your “Why”: Have a general idea of one or two things you’d like to focus on first.
- Check your tech or route: If you’re meeting online, test your camera. If you’re coming to the office, give yourself time to park.
- Write down your questions: It’s okay to interview your therapist! Ask about their style or how they handle specific issues.
- Be kind to yourself: It is normal to feel nervous. Most people feel a sense of relief about ten minutes into the conversation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Starting Therapy
How long is a typical session?
document notes and prepare for their next client. Initial intake sessions are 80 minutes.
Will my insurance cover the cost?
Most extended health benefit plans in BC cover Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCC). Since coverage varies by provider (such as Sun Life, Pacific Blue Cross, or Canada Life), we recommend checking your specific plan for “psychological services” or “counselling” before your first visit.
How many sessions will I need?
There is no “one-size-fits-all” answer, as every journey is unique. Some clients find relief and clarity in 4 to 6 sessions for a specific challenge, while others prefer ongoing monthly support for deeper personal growth. You and your counsellor will collaborate on a timeline that feels right for you.
How is a “multidisciplinary” approach different?
In a traditional clinic, you might see a therapist who only looks at your thoughts. In our practice, we look at the whole person. This means, when needed, we connect you with other health professionals on the team so that we can take care of the whole you rather than part of you.
For example: If you are struggling with gut issues, your counsellor might suggest a quick chat with our Naturopathic Doctor to check your other possible contributing factors, or our Nutrition Coach to see if your nutrition is sufficient. It’s about wrapping a full team of support around you.
What if I don’t “click” with my counsellor?
This is a very common concern! Research shows that the relationship between you and your therapist is the biggest predictor of success. If it doesn’t feel like a good fit after the first session, let us know. We are a team for a reason, and we are happy to help you transition to another one of our practitioners who might better match your personality.
Is what I say actually private?
Yes. Confidentiality is the cornerstone of therapy. Everything shared is private, with a few legal exceptions (such as if there is an immediate risk of harm to yourself or others). Your counsellor will walk you through these “limits of confidentiality” during your first few minutes together so there are no surprises.
