Art therapy is a therapeutic modality that engages an individual’s natural creative resources to promote mental, physical, and spiritual well-being when words alone fall short. Art therapy is a powerful way to identify and process emotions and thoughts, process difficult and painful feelings, gain personal insight and self-awareness, reduce stress and anxious feelings, promote creative problem solving, and uncover vast personal resources. No artistic knowledge or skill is required. The focus is on creative expression and the art therapist will provide all of the information and materials required.

What is Art Therapy?

Art therapy is a form of non-verbal communication of thoughts and feelings which may be difficult to articulate. Art therapy brings together the creative process and psychotherapy to assist with self-understanding, insight, and problem-solving.

Art therapy addresses a wide range of issues commonly addressed in traditional “talk” therapy, such as the identification of thoughts and feelings and a means for processing them, encouraging personal growth, creating meaning, achieving insight, resolving conflict and promoting unique solutions to problems, and increasing physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

In art therapy, activities such as collage, working with natural objects, drawing, coloring, painting, clay work, photography, writing, and poetry are often undertaken. The art therapist works collaboratively with the individual to understand their therapeutic goals and together they create a therapeutic plan.

  • Creating a safe therapeutic space to promote creative expression: We will ensure you feel comfortable by introducing you to the art materials and providing you with an opportunity to explore materials of your choice.
  • As you explore the art materials we will assess and collaborate with you to understand your areas of concerns and develop an art therapy treatment plan that suits your goals: We focus on getting to know you and understanding your unique concerns, desires, and goals for therapy.
  • Art therapy promotes the creation of an external image that can provide insight into feelings, thoughts, and desires that can be better understood through imagery: We support you in reflecting upon and deepening your understanding of your experience in both creating and viewing your image. If you do not wish to discuss your imagery, your decision will be honoured. The choice is always yours.
  • Art therapy can be a powerful tool for managing feelings of stress and anxiety: We provide education and engagement with creative techniques that promote stress reduction, relaxation, and the health benefits that accompany these states.
